Bangladesh has met 76% of its FY25 rice import target, bringing in 0.38 million tonnes out of the planned 0.50 million tonnes, with shipments from India, Pakistan, Myanmar, and Vietnam. The food ministry has now extended the import target to 0.90 million tonnes until December. The Directorate General of Food (DGoF) has also procured 0.53 million tonnes from domestic sources, raising government warehouse stocks to 1.0 million tonnes. Rice prices have remained stable over the last two weeks after a Tk 10-12 per kg hike in recent months, though aromatic rice prices have increased by Tk 15-20 per kg. Coarse rice is selling at Tk 58-60 per kg, medium at Tk 68-72 per kg, and fine at Tk 85-100 per kg, while aromatic rice is priced between Tk 140-170 per kg depending on packaging. Traders attribute the rise in aromatic rice prices to recent government announcements on potential exports. Meanwhile, global rice prices declined by 6.8% in February compared to January and are now 24% lower than a year ago, according to the FAO All Rice Price Index.
