Planning Minister stated that the government is compelled to closely monitor and regulate the prices of essential commodities to ensure their affordability. He specifically addressed the issue of surging onion prices, which he attributed to distorted buying and selling prices within the market and an unfair production system. Speaking as the chief guest at a post-budget discussion organized by the Economic Reporters’ Forum (ERF) and the Research and Policy Integration for Development (RAPID), the minister urged his cabinet colleagues in charge of commerce and agriculture to remain vigilant in addressing such price fluctuations.
He acknowledged the difficulty of achieving the inflation target of 6.0% for the upcoming fiscal year but affirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining control over commodity prices. The event was chaired by ERF president and attended by industry representatives and experts who expressed concerns about the impact of interest rate hikes on inflation and the need for effective demand management in the proposed budget.
