The Bangladesh government has approved ten additional companies to import 50 million eggs as part of ongoing efforts to stabilize egg prices. This brings the total number of authorized companies to 35, with permission to import 250 million eggs from foreign sources.
Challenges in executing imports have been faced by the initial 25 companies permitted to import 200 million eggs, with only 62,000 eggs entering the country from India so far. The move is expected to further reduce the prices of eggs in the local market, which currently range from Tk 10 to Tk 11.25, slightly below the government-fixed rate of Tk 12. The commerce ministry estimates the country’s daily demand for eggs to be 40 million.
