The Commerce Ministry in Bangladesh has taken a groundbreaking step by allowing potato imports to address the surging prices of the staple in the domestic market. Despite ample local production, the market has witnessed an unprecedented rise, with potato prices reaching Tk 60 per kilogram in Dhaka.
This decision follows the government’s previous attempt to regulate prices, fixing the retail price at Tk 35 per kg, which proved ineffective. The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics reported a 3% YoY increase in potato production to 1.04 crore tonnes in the last harvesting season. However, the Bangladesh Cold Storage Association contested this figure, estimating only 30 lakh tonnes stored in cold storage.
The retail price of potatoes in Dhaka currently stands at Tk 55-60, a 32% increase from the previous month. The Commerce Ministry aims to stabilize the market by encouraging imports and invites interested businesses to apply for permission.
