Following the Prime Minister’s advice to dry chili for the upcoming rainy season, the government has authorized the import of the spice to address soaring prices in the local market ahead of Eid-ul-Adha. The agriculture ministry has granted approval to 30 companies to import a total of 11,600 tonnes of green chilies and 55,600 tonnes of tomatoes, as stated in a press release. Prices for green chilies have skyrocketed, with rates ranging from Tk250-280 per kg in the capital’s kitchen markets, compared to Tk120-130 per kg just a month ago.
Local markets have witnessed an even steeper surge, with green chilies reaching Tk300-350 and tomatoes priced at Tk80-100. The reduced supply of green chilies is attributed to damage caused by heavy rainfall across the country, as reported by traders. This situation, coupled with the heightened demand during Eid-ul-Azha, has contributed to a surge in dry chili prices, reaching Tk400-420 per kg for local varieties and Tk420-450 per kg for imported ones.
