The Bangladesh government plans to establish rooftop solar parks in factories and warehouses under the Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) to boost solar energy production and support the country’s economy. The BJMC has issued Terms of Reference (TOR) for the initiative and is seeking proposals from interested parties. The lease tenure for using rooftops will be 20 years, with the possibility of extension based on performance. The solar parks will produce electricity to supply the national grid. The BJMC aims to revive closed mills through private management via lease or rental agreements. However, experts have expressed concerns about the feasibility of the initiative due to infrastructure challenges and the need to run the jute mills for successful implementation. The current status of jute mills in Bangladesh is that 25 state-owned mills under BJMC were closed on July 1, 2020.
