The government plans to halve the source tax to 1% on the supply of 28 essential commodities, including rice, wheat, potatoes, and various spices, to alleviate high inflation. This measure, alongside reducing the total tax incidence on imported packaged powdered milk from 89.32% to 58.60% for packages up to 2.5kg, aims to ease consumer costs. Currently, bulk powdered milk imports face a 37% tax. The advance income tax for bulk powdered milk importers will also be calculated at the import stage. These changes follow directives from the Prime Minister to avoid increasing taxes on food and related items due to the country’s food inflation, which was over 10% in April. Experts and business leaders support these tax cuts but emphasize the need for proper market management to ensure consumer benefits. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) will implement these measures in the upcoming budget to be proposed on June 6.
