The government is considering waiving demurrage charges for additional storage time at Chattogram port due to recent unrest. State Minister for Shipping announced this potential waiver, highlighting the government’s previous decision to waive Tk 500 crore in storage rents during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The recent unrest, including internet blackouts and curfews, has led to significant cargo congestion at the port, with storage capacity over 79% utilized. The port charges daily demurrage fees after a four-day free period: $6 per day for the first week, $12 for the second week, and $24 per day thereafter for a 20-foot container. For 40-foot containers, these fees are doubled.
