The government of Bangladesh has implemented new distribution charges for gas production, transmission, and distribution companies after the recent record hike in retail gas prices. Effective from July 2023, the largest gas distribution utility, Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited, will see an additional Tk0.08 per cubic meter (CM) of gas sales, increasing its distribution charges to Tk0.2100 from Tk0.1300 per CM. However, consumers will not be directly affected as the increased charges will be sourced from the previously hiked retail rate set earlier this year. The government’s move is aimed at reducing subsidies and cutting the fiscal deficit. Additionally, transmission charges per unit of gas were raised, and wellhead margins for state-owned gas production companies were also increased.
