Govt Repays Tk9355 Crore to Central Bank

Economic Tag: Central Bank, Govt.

The government repaid Tk9,355 crore to the central bank in July 2023, the first month of FY24, as ADP implementation hadn’t fully commenced and June’s revenue earnings were strong. However, it borrowed Tk5,532 crore from commercial banks in July, possibly using this borrowed money for repayment. The government’s central bank borrowing now stands at Tk1.48 lakh crore, total banking sector borrowing at Tk3.90 lakh crore. Despite the repayment, economists argue that inflation remains a concern due to excessive money printing in the past year. The government’s loan target of Tk1,32,395 crore for FY24 may need revision given increased expenditure and upcoming elections.
