Bangladesh’s Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources Ministry has requested $1 billion in budgetary support from the World Bank to address a $2.2 billion debt owed to power and energy suppliers. The request was made during a meeting between Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan, the ministry’s adviser, and Abdoulaye Seck, the World Bank’s country director for Bangladesh and Bhutan. The interim government, recently formed with urgent mandates, has already suspended the Quick Enhancement of Electricity and Energy Supply Act 2010 and removed the government’s authority to set energy prices without public hearings. Kabir emphasized that all future public procurements will adhere strictly to existing rules.
