The demand for maize in feed and food-processing industries has led to a surge in its cultivation across Bangladesh, resulting in a record-high production of 4.55 million tonnes in the last financial year. To meet the escalating demand, the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) has set an ambitious target of 5.81 million tonnes from 0.543 million hectares for the current season. Dr. Tajul Islam Patwary, Director of the DAE Field Service Wing, expects production to exceed even this target due to favorable climate conditions. The high profitability of maize, offering a minimum profit margin of 60%, has incentivized farmers to switch from other crops. Maize is extensively used in poultry and animal feed industries, with 50-60% going to poultry feed alone.
Additionally, maize silage, popular for livestock feed, has seen increased adoption. Private importers have brought in 2.0 to 2.4 million tonnes of maize over the past five years to meet the 6.0-6.5 million demand. Maize cultivation traced back to the 1990s, has significantly improved living standards for farmers, especially in the northern and southwestern regions, offering substantial profits compared to other crops.
