Industry: Chemical & Engineering

The Ministry of Labor and Employment has announced a new minimum wage structure for tannery workers under the Bangladesh Labor Act, 2006. Effective from November 2024, the minimum wage in divisional cities and Savar is Tk 18,001, while in other areas it is Tk 17,048. Compared to the 2018 rates, wages have increased by 33.34%, with five grades introduced. House rent allowances differ: 70% of the basic wage in divisional cities and Savar, and 60% in other areas. Apprentice workers will now receive Tk 11,330, up from Tk 7,000, for a three-month apprenticeship period.

The highest-grade workers will earn Tk 34,168, up from Tk 25,400 in 2018, while unskilled workers in the fifth grade will earn Tk 18,001 in divisional cities and Savar. The basic wage will increase annually by 5%. While welcoming the update after an 11-month delay, union leaders expressed concerns that it falls short of inflation-adjusted demands.
