The government is planning to set a tax revenue target of Tk 4.80 trillion for the National Board of Revenue (NBR) in the fiscal year 2024-25, representing a 17.07% increase over the revised target for the current year. This target aims to achieve parity between income tax and VAT collections for the first time, aligning with the government’s goal of increasing direct tax contributions within total tax revenue. The income tax and VAT wings will each be tasked with collecting Tk 1.77 trillion, while the customs wing targets Tk 1.24 trillion. NBR officials anticipate higher direct tax mobilization through measures such as increasing taxes on luxury goods and raising the tax rate for high-income earners, aiming to reduce reliance on indirect taxes and broaden the tax base.
