The government is intensifying efforts to promote summer onion production, aiming for self-sufficiency in the crop. The Agriculture Secretary announced increased incentives for summer onion producers, emphasizing the distribution of free seeds and fertilizers to encourage cultivation.
The government has already witnessed positive outcomes from providing free seeds and plans to extend more incentives in the coming year. Akter shared these plans during an interaction with farmers in Isakhali village, Meherpur district. Over the past years, the Agriculture Ministry has distributed free seeds and fertilizers, totaling more than Tk 32 crore in incentives.
The Department of Agricultural Extension aims to cultivate 5,000 hectares of summer onions, targeting a production of 51,000 tonnes. In the fiscal year 2022-23, incentives contributed to the production of 39,000 tonnes, surpassing the previous year’s 37,000 tonnes.
