The Bangladesh government plans to clear approximately $2 billion in arrears to international energy suppliers within two months, addressing overdue payments to companies like Chevron Bangladesh and QatarEnergy. Due to a foreign currency shortage, reserves dropped from $48 billion in 2023 to $22 billion in 2024, delaying payments. Chevron, which supplies 1,109 MMCFD of the country’s total 2,790 MMCFD gas production, is owed around $190 million, equivalent to five months of payments. Petrobangla pays Chevron about $40 million per month. Additionally, the Indian Adani Group has an outstanding balance of $600 million, with Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) paying around $100 million, including arrears. Several international oil companies (IOCs) had threatened to suspend gas supply and LNG shipments due to these unpaid dues. The Finance Ministry assured necessary support, while the government prioritizes uninterrupted LNG imports to maintain energy supply for industries, power plants, and households.
