Bangladesh has sought special permission from India to import 100,000 tonnes of sugar and 50,000 tonnes of onions before the upcoming Ramadan, a holy month when demand for these commodities traditionally increases. The move comes amid India’s ban on sugar and onion exports. State Minister for Commerce had a telephone conversation with Indian Minister of Commerce and Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution on January 24,2024, seeking special consideration. They assured BD of providing the necessary permission, and the Bangladesh Ministry of Commerce has urged the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi to follow up on this matter. The ban on sugar and onion exports from India is currently in place.
