Govt to Urge Duty-Free Access for US Cotton-Made Apparel

Industry: RMG & Textile
Economic Tag: Export, Trade

Bangladesh is gearing up to request the United States for duty-free, quota-free market access for Bangladeshi apparel made from US cotton during a Trade and Investment Cooperation Forum Agreement (Ticfa) Council meeting scheduled for today in Dhaka, according to sources from the commerce ministry.

Additionally, Bangladesh intends to ask the United States Food and Drug Administration to simplify the registration procedure for Bangladeshi pharmaceutical products during the meeting. Despite making similar requests during the last Ticfa meeting held in Washington in November, Bangladesh did not receive a response from the US.

A commerce ministry official stated that the United States has shown interest in boosting cotton exports to Bangladesh, leading to the abolition of the double fumigation requirement for cotton imports from the US. Consequently, there has been a significant increase in cotton imports from the US, with the market share of US cotton in Bangladesh rising from 9% to approximately 14%.
