With the approach of the Boro season in December 2023, three government-owned urea fertilizer factories, previously closed due to gas shortages, have resumed operations. Gas redirection from power generation to fertilizer factories and a government directive prioritizing gas allocation to ensure sufficient urea supply for the Boro season have contributed to the reopening.
The Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) now manages four operational urea fertilizer plants, with all factories operational, ensuring stability in urea supply. The closure of three factories had raised concerns about meeting the urea demand of 13 lakh tonnes projected for the upcoming Boro season. However, ongoing political unrest, including strikes and blockades, poses a new challenge to fertilizer distribution, potentially disrupting agricultural production during the crucial cropping period.
