The government is contemplating a reduction in the regulatory duty on sugar imports from the current 30% to 20% as a measure to stabilize the market. Importers currently face a specific tax of Tk3,000 per ton of sugar, along with a 15% VAT, 30% regulatory duty, and 2% advance income tax.
Proposals have been submitted to the higher authority, and a decision is expected this week. Consumers view this potential initiative positively, emphasizing the need for robust monitoring to ensure actual benefits reach consumers. Despite a global decline in sugar prices, consumers in Bangladesh have allegedly not experienced a corresponding reduction.
The total tax incidence per kilogram of sugar, including various taxes, is approximately 65%, amounting to Tk42. The current annual sugar demand is 20-22 lakh tonnes, with 97% being imported.
