The government has reinstated Grameen Bank’s tax exemption, effective immediately, for the next five years until December 2029. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) announced the decision, requiring the bank to continue filing annual income tax returns. Established by Nobel Laureate Prof. Muhammad Yunus in 1983, Grameen Bank has historically benefited from tax exemptions due to its focus on poverty alleviation, with renewals typically granted every five years. The exemption had lapsed in December 2020 after the previous government chose not to extend it.
