Grameenphone, in compliance with the Supreme Court’s instructions, has made a payment of Tk1,163 crore to the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) as value-added tax (VAT) for the renewal of 2G spectrum and license fees. The company’s spokesperson, Hossain Sadat, stated that Grameenphone received a certified copy of the Appellate Division’s judgment on June 1, 2023, and subsequently issued pay orders to the BTRC on June 14, 2023, while reserving their rights as permitted by law. In 2011-12, Grameenphone, Robi, and Banglalink filed separate cases against the BTRC regarding the telecom operators’ 2G spectrum and license fees. The Supreme Court’s ruling on January 10, 2023, ordered the three companies to collectively pay Tk2,354 crore as outstanding VAT. According to BTRC data, Banglalink, Robi, and Airtel have dues of Tk625.27 crore, Tk565.58 crore, and Tk59.05 crore, respectively. Robi officials have indicated that they will settle their dues upon receiving a certified copy of the Supreme Court’s judgment.
