During the June 2023 quarter, loans disbursed within the green and sustainable finance sector in Bangladesh increased by 18% (equivalent to Tk6,132 crore) compared to the previous year, according to the Bangladesh Bank. Loan disbursements within this sector for April–June 2023 amounted to Tk40,425 crore, up from Tk34,294 crore during the same quarter of the previous year.
However, in the June quarter of 2023, loan disbursements increased by only Tk116 crore compared to the previous quarter. Bankers anticipate a decrease in loan disbursements in the next quarter due to liquidity constraints and the global economic slowdown. Factors such as rising import costs and a decrease in garment product shipments are contributing to this trend.
The central bank has mandated that banks allocate 5% of their total loans to green finance and 20% to sustainable financing. As of April–June 2023, banks disbursed 13.16% and 6.16% of their respective targets in these sectors, with substantial growth in loan disbursements observed.
