Loan disbursements in the green and sustainable sectors surged by 160% to Tk60,280 crore in the December quarter of 2023, driven by banks and non-bank financial institutions aiming for positive ratings from Bangladesh Bank. The top performers included EXIM Bank, BRAC Bank, Eastern Bank among banks, and CVC Finance and Bangladesh Infrastructure Finance Fund among NBFIs. Banks increased lending in this sector as the central bank publicly announced ratings based on investments in green and sustainable finance. Twenty-five banks and ten NBFIs surpassed the 5% target for green finance, while twenty banks and nine NBFIs met the 20% sustainable finance target. The central bank mandates 5% allocation for green finance and 20% for sustainable financing. Investments primarily focus on industrial projects to reduce carbon emissions. Refinance support and low interest rates are incentivizing green banking activities.
