The prices of green chillies have skyrocketed to a record-high of Tk800-1,000 per kilogram in Brahmanbaria, Bagerhat, and Sylhet kitchen markets. This surge is a result of a significant decrease in the supply of green chillies during the Eid-ul-Azha holidays. Customers have raised concerns about the exorbitant prices and scarcity, attributing them to a trader syndicate and inadequate market monitoring. In certain areas, retail prices reached Tk800 per kilogram, causing frustration among buyers. Vegetable sellers have reported a shortage of chillies due to limited inflow during the Eid break.
Within three days, the price in Bagerhat doubled from Tk400 to Tk800 per kilogram. Customers emphasized the need for government intervention and monitoring to regulate prices. In Sylhet, green chillies now sell for Tk1,000 per kilogram, compared to Tk120-150 just ten days ago. Some consumers have resorted to buying dry chillies due to the exorbitant prices. However, there is hope that prices will stabilize as supply returns to normal after the holidays. Efforts are being made to dismantle trading syndicates, as stated by the Commerce Minister, who also assured that price monitoring will occur.
