Green chilli prices in Chattogram have surged within a week, reaching Tk190 to Tk280 per kg, up from Tk100-120 the previous week. The rapid increase is attributed to a sharp decline in supply caused by untimely rain. Previously peaking at Tk1,000 per kg three months ago, the prices are impacting sales volume, with some traders reporting a significant decrease.
Reazuddin Bazar in Chattogram, the largest wholesale market for green chillies, has experienced a reduction in the daily arrival of trucks, dropping from 12-15 to 7-10. Drought and rain have damaged chilli plants across the country, leading to a sudden supply shortage. While some attribute the price surge to natural factors, others suggest syndicates may be influencing the market. Consumers’ associations call for increased government monitoring to address the situation.
