Bangladesh’s foreign currency reserves have fallen below $21 billion, raising concerns about the nation’s dollar supply. While the Bangladesh Bank reports $26.85 billion in gross reserves, as per their calculation method, the International Monetary Fund’s BPM6 methodology shows reserves at $20.96 billion as of October 18, 2023. The decline in reserves is attributed to the central bank’s significant sale of US dollars to commercial banks to assist them in managing their international payment obligations amid the foreign exchange shortage. During FY2023, the central bank sold a record $13.57 billion to commercial banks for this purpose, with the trend continuing into FY2024. This situation highlights the need for measures to stabilize the nation’s foreign exchange reserves.
