On November 19, 2024, the High Court issued three key directives regarding the government’s 2017 electricity purchase deal with India’s Adani Power Limited. The court ordered the government to investigate the deal’s process and submit a report within 60 days. It also instructed the energy and mineral resources secretary to form a committee of internationally recognized energy and legal experts, who will provide a detailed report on the agreement within two months of their formation. Furthermore, the chairman of the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) has been asked to submit all negotiation minutes from the deal within a month.
The directives came after a writ petition challenged the legality of the power purchase agreement signed on November 5, 2017. The High Court issued a rule questioning the fairness of the agreement and its potential violation of public interest, scheduling further hearings for February 25, 2025.
