Recent heavy rainfall in various regions of Bangladesh, caused by a late-monsoon low, has severely impacted the agriculture sector and exacerbated concerns about rising vegetable prices. Farmers who planted early winter crops like potatoes, onions, and green chillies are reporting significant losses due to varying degrees of crop damage. In some areas, waterlogging and river erosions have occurred due to the heavy rain and strong winds. This has led to severe damage to vegetable, chilli, and potato fields in several regions.
The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) reports that nearly 62,000 hectares of land were dedicated to early potato farming by October 1, with 15% severely damaged and 30% partially damaged, indicating potential production drops. The Field Service Wing (FSW) of DAE has set ambitious targets for vegetable, potato, and onion production this winter season, but approximately 30,000 hectares of vegetable fields have been affected.
