The project to establish 12 hi-tech parks across Bangladesh, launched in April 2017, aims to foster a skilled IT workforce and create job opportunities. Despite a revised budget of Tk 1,846 crore and an extended deadline to 2024, only 14.34% of physical progress has been achieved, with a mere 12.57% of the budget spent. Delays are attributed to insufficient government funds for customs duties, the Covid-19 pandemic, and protracted land acquisition processes. The project now seeks an extension to 2027 and an increased budget of Tk 2,000 crore. Economist Mustafa K Mujeri highlights systemic issues, including accountability and poor feasibility studies, as persistent causes of project delays in Bangladesh, leading to financial waste and suboptimal economic returns.
