The High Court has issued a directive to the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to immediately block online betting and gambling advertisements on various digital platforms, including social media and television. This includes a specific emphasis on sports channels. Additionally, the court has instructed the Bangladesh Bank to issue necessary directives to mobile financial services providers such as bKash and Nagad, requiring them to halt their gateways and channels used for making payments to betting websites. The order was given in response to a petition filed by two Supreme Court lawyers, Miftaul Alam, and Sumit Kumar Sarkar. Advocate Kamal Hossain Meahzi represented the petitioners during the proceedings.
This decision by the High Court aims to curb the promotion of online betting and gambling activities in Bangladesh, aligning with efforts to regulate the digital landscape and protect individuals from potential harm associated with these practices.
