High Inflation Drives 79 Lakh Bangladeshis into Poverty

Economic Tag: Income, Inflation

Persistently high inflation since 2022 has pushed an additional 79 lakh people into poverty in Bangladesh, raising the total number of people living below the poverty line to 3.82 crore. The inflationary pressure has also placed an additional 98 lakh people at risk of falling into poverty, according to a study by the Research and Policy Integration for Development (RAPID). The study, presented at a workshop on “Current Macroeconomic Situation and Preparation for LDC Graduation,” revealed that 38 lakh people who were previously poor have now fallen below the extreme poverty line. RAPID Chairman MA Razzaque attributed the rise in poverty to eroding purchasing power and economic mismanagement by the previous government, which took loans exceeding Tk1 trillion in one year. The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics reported overall inflation at 11.38% in November, with food inflation close to 14%. The study highlighted the need for reforms and careful management to address the economic challenges.
