High Prices Lead to Decreased Meat Consumption

In recent times, country has witnessed a decline in meat consumption, particularly beef and goat meat, attributed to the surge in meat prices. The economic strain on households, driven by escalating costs of essential commodities, has led people to opt for alternative, more affordable food sources.

Data from the Department of Livestock Services reveals a noteworthy decrease in cattle and goat slaughter over the past year, with a decrease from 3.29 million to approximately 2.67 million. Factors contributing to this shift include economic challenges, religious obligations during festivals like Qurbani, and the overall rise in living expenses.

The price of beef and goat meat has surged, currently being sold at Tk 750-800 and Tk 900-950 per kilogram, respectively, in Dhaka markets. Over the past year, meat prices have experienced a significant increase, with a kilogram of cattle and goat meat costing 100-150 Taka more. This surge has impacted consumer behavior, leading to a decline in meat consumption, particularly among the economically challenged population.
