A recent analysis of private universities in the country reveals soaring tuition fees for graduation and post-graduation courses, resulting in financial burdens on students. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has sought information on fee structures, shedding light on the staggering figures. For instance, BRAC University charges Tk 16.63 lakh ($19,575) for a five-year architecture course, while Uttara University levies Tk 41,700 ($491) for a BEd program.
The highest fee at North South University reaches Tk 13.18 lakh ($15,521) for a Bachelor of Pharmacy, contributing to an average monthly expenditure of over Tk 22,000 ($259) for private university students. Additionally, private universities collect funds through various sectors and expenses. The UGC is considering introducing a fee ceiling to regulate tuition fees, as some institutions disregard the current law requiring UGC approval. Efforts to amend legislation are underway to enforce UGC approval for fee determination, as private universities rely solely on tuition fees due to the absence of government financial support.
