Hilsa Fish Pricier in BD Than Singapore

Industry: Agriculture & Livestock, Fisheries

In Singapore, hilsa fish is imported mainly from Myanmar and is priced between $7.5 and $10 per kg. Expatriates from Bangladesh, India, and Myanmar are the primary consumers. Three pieces of hilsa fish weighing around 1.3 to 1.4 kg are sold for $10, equivalent to Tk 630 per kg. A larger size hilsa packet (500-700 grams) costs $14 or Tk 1131 per kg. Commodity Connect, a Bangladesh-based company in Singapore, sells a small hilsa packet for $7 or Tk 565 and a larger one for $10 or Tk 810.

In Bangladesh, hilsa is sold at Tk 945 per kg for 400 to 450 grams and Tk 1600 per kg for larger sizes. Bangladesh is a major hilsa producer, accounting for 65% of global production. Importing hilsa from Myanmar is preferred due to competitive prices and faster certification processes. In contrast, importing from Bangladesh is costlier and time-consuming. Meat prices in Singapore are also lower compared to Bangladesh, with beef at $10 per kg versus Tk 1100 to Tk 1300 per kg.
