The price of hilsa has surged by Tk 100 per kilogram following increased demand for exports to India ahead of the Durga Puja festival. Hilsa wholesaler Narottam Das revealed that the price rose to Tk 1,520-1,550 per kilogram, up from Tk 1,450-1,470. The government permitted the export of 3,950 tonnes of hilsa to India between September 21 and October 30 at $10 per kilogram.
The decision to allow exports has led to a Tk 10,000 per maund increase in wholesale prices at fish landing stations. While fishermen and traders are pleased, local buyers express concern over the significant price hike, reaching one and a half times higher than the previous year. Despite some discrepancies in reported prices, traders anticipate limited price declines without increased hilsa catches in the local market before Durga Puja.
