The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has agreed to reduce Bangladesh’s reserve target to $18 billion from $20.10 billion for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024. The IMF requested a detailed plan from Bangladesh on how it will increase its reserves in the future.
The third tranche of the $4.7 billion loan program with the IMF is set to be released in May. Although Bangladesh has received two instalments, it has not fully met the IMF’s reserve targets. The IMF is currently in Dhaka to review the measures taken to fulfil the 38 conditions associated with the loan. Despite the ongoing loan program, Bangladesh has not met its revenue collection targets and has failed to preserve net reserves as required by the IMF.
