Bangladesh has received praise from the IMF for implementing the Crawling Peg Mid-Rate (CPMR) system, which aims to enhance foreign exchange reserves. The IMF views this transition as a positive move towards greater exchange rate flexibility, facilitating orderly adjustments in external imbalances. The new regime is expected to bolster external competitiveness, stimulate remittances and export receipts, and alleviate foreign exchange market pressures. To sustain these gains, supportive policies such as tighter monetary and fiscal measures, reduced non-monetary use of reserves, improved business climate, and enhanced foreign capital inflows are crucial. The IMF also acknowledges Bangladesh’s ongoing commitment to structural reforms, including climate change mitigation and banking sector regulation enhancements, facilitated under an IMF-supported economic reform program since January 2023.
