A visiting IMF delegation in Bangladesh discussed the unreturned export proceeds of around $3 billion over the past 10 to 15 years with local garment manufacturers. The delegation raised questions about potential money laundering linked to this discrepancy. The IMF team also inquired about challenges faced during exports, including whether letter of credit (LC) issuance was being restricted due to dwindling foreign currency reserves.
Bangladesh’s foreign reserves stood at $21.07 billion as of October 11, having significantly dropped from $48 billion in August 2021. Additionally, the delegation questioned whether the devaluation of the local currency, the taka, which has decreased by 28% in the past year, was giving the country a competitive edge in global trade. Bangladesh Bank stated that the team discussed these issues during meetings with various ministries and the central bank. The IMF delegation is in Bangladesh to negotiate terms for a $4.5 billion loan, and it is expected to release the second tranche of the loan next month.
