Bangladesh’s imports from Pakistan rose nearly 10% in 2024, reaching 19.14 lakh tonnes, driven by direct shipping and relaxed customs rules. The launch of the Karachi–Chattogram direct route in November 2024 cut delivery time from 30 to 11 days, slashing costs by a third. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) also eased customs inspections, removing the previous 100% manual check bottlenecks. Key imports include fabrics, sodium carbonate, vehicle parts, and women’s garments, while Bangladesh exports jute, tea, pharma, and RMG to Pakistan. Despite the volume increase, import costs fell by Tk743 crore in 2024 due to lower global prices, saving traders money and boosting customs revenue by 9.1% to Tk716 crore. With further growth expected in 2025, the route is reshaping bilateral trade dynamics.
