The local paint industry in Bangladesh is struggling due to increased supplementary duties (SD) on paint-related raw materials and product supply, raising costs and reducing consumer demand. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) raised SD to 30% for raw materials and 10% for product supply. The Bangladesh Paint Manufacturers’ Association (BPMA) expressed concerns, citing existing challenges like high inflation and a weak Taka. The industry, contributing significantly to government revenue and employing around 10 lakh people, faces shrinking profit margins, with potential factory closures and job losses if tax issues are not resolved.
