India’s state-owned export agency, NCEL, plans to purchase 1,650 tones of onions at Rs 29/kg from private traders for exports to Bangladesh, marking the first official export in over three months. The export ban, in place from December 8 to March 31, aimed to stabilize domestic prices but caused a global shortage. India allowed the export of 50,000 tones of onions to Bangladesh in March. Onion prices in Maharashtra’s Nashik district range from Rs 7 to Rs 16/kg. Exporters claim that over 50% of onions were smuggled out during the ban. NCEL’s selling price to Bangladesh is undisclosed, but current prices there range from Rs 80-90/kg, suggesting considerable profit for the agency.
