The Indian government is proactively addressing security concerns by installing radiation detection equipment (RDE) at eight key land crossing points along its borders with Bangladesh, Pakistan, Myanmar, and Nepal. The installation of RDE is planned at Integrated Check Posts (ICP) and land ports like Petrapole, Agartala, Dawki, Sutarkandi, and Moreh, which share borders with Bangladesh.
The primary objective is to prevent the smuggling of radioactive materials that could potentially be used for illicit purposes, such as the production of nuclear devices. By monitoring cargo trucks and distinguishing between various types of radiation sources, the RDE systems will aid Indian security agencies in maintaining border security. These measures are being implemented with technical assistance from foreign agencies, including those from the United States, and are of particular importance for safeguarding India’s border with Bangladesh.
