In the first half of FY 2023-24, industrial loan disbursements in Bangladesh rose by 10%, totaling Tk 3,09,503 crore compared to Tk 2,80,934 crore in FY 2022-23. This increase was primarily driven by the 11.11% rise in the dollar rate, reaching Tk 110 by December 2023 from Tk 99 in December 2022. Industries reliant on imports faced higher costs due to this currency depreciation, prompting increased borrowing for covering expenses. Despite Bangladesh Bank’s removal of the 9% lending rate cap in July 2023, the average lending rate was 9.36% by December 2023, favoring local currency loans. However, challenges like liquidity crises, high non-performing loans, and economic instability constrained overall loan growth. Recovery of industrial loans also decreased by 9.3%, indicating the strain on businesses amidst economic downturns.
