Overall inflation in Bangladesh decreased by 1.17 percentage points in August, falling from 11.66% in July to 10.49%, as reported by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS). Food inflation also declined, dropping from 14.10% in July to 11.36% in August. However, non-food inflation experienced a slight increase, rising from 9.68% in July to 9.74% in August. July marked a peak in inflation, with the overall rate reaching its highest level in 13 years, driven partly by the student quota reform movement. The previous highest food inflation recorded was 14.36% in April 2011, with July’s figure of 14% representing a significant rise not seen in over a decade.
