In January 2024, Bangladesh’s inflation surged to 9.86%, reversing December’s decline, as per the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS). This marks continued inflation above 9% since March, with non-food inflation sharply rising, attributed to escalating global transportation costs and a dollar crisis. Food inflation slightly eased to 9.56%. Urban and rural areas both saw inflationary pressure, with wages lagging behind inflation for 24 consecutive months. Disruptions in the Red Sea led to increased freight charges, elevating transportation costs and contributing to inflation.
