Efforts are underway to clear $700 million in overdue fuel and gas import bills. Petrobangla and the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) jointly owe this amount to global suppliers. The unpaid dues to Chevron, the largest gas producer in the country, stand at $219 million. The amount receivable by Qatargas and Oman’s OQ Trading Limited is $69.07 million and $54.66 million, respectively, for supplying LNG under long-term contracts.
Additionally, $113.82 million is outstanding for spot LNG supply. State lenders, including Janata Bank and Agrani Bank, need $268 million and $114 million, respectively, to settle the dues for fuel oil and liquid gas. The Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation imports around 0.5 million tonnes of refined fuel each month, and as of 6 June, its payables to six refined fuel suppliers stood at $234.93 million. To address the payment crisis, interventions from the energy and finance ministries are being sought to ensure the availability of foreign currency for settlement.
