Bangladesh’s interim government has reduced the threshold for registering trade unions from 20% to 15% of a company’s workers. This decision follows discussions with a US delegation led by Kelly M Fay RodrÃguez, addressing labor rights issues. The government acknowledged concerns about labor department collusion with employers to block union formation and agreed to independent investigations. The labor secretary also highlighted the potential benefits of implementing the US’s “11-Point Labour Action Plan” for boosting exports. Additionally, an impact analysis on allowing unions in export processing zones (EPZs) is underway, with possible separate legislation for EPZs.
