The interim government plans to cut the budget for fiscal year 2024-25 by Tk 1 lakh crore by eliminating unnecessary projects initiated under political considerations. This includes removing initiatives that benefited ruling party leaders and activists. The goal is to reduce wasteful expenditure, ease pressure on the financial sector, stabilize foreign exchange reserves, and curb inflation. A significant part of the cuts will come from the Annual Development Programme (ADP), with halted projects by former lawmakers expected to save Tk 2,257 crore. The finance and planning ministries are working to identify areas for reduction, aiming to amend the budget before the usual mid-year revision. If successful, the revised budget could be reduced by over 12.5%, a substantial increase compared to past revision rates.
