The interim government achieved a Tk 48.38 billion fiscal surplus in Q1 FY 2024-25, attributed to restrained spending amid an economic crunch. Revenue receipts exceeded Tk 1.0 trillion, with a 4.7% year-on-year increase, driven by robust non-tax revenues growing over 31%. However, the surplus was one-third lower than the same period last year. ADP spending remained sluggish, utilizing less than 4% of the Tk 2.65 trillion development budget. Debt servicing consumed 37.3% of the budget. Total spending rose 21%, reaching Tk 963 billion. Officials anticipate growing deficits in later quarters, highlighting the need for enhanced revenue measures to address a projected Tk 1.38 trillion shortfall.
